|Title||Arlington County Planning Units|
This is in support of the other data request for the information on planning units: the data in the referenced document is so censored as to be functionally useless. Almost every planning unit is listed as <10. Furthermore, there's also no analog for the elementary or high schools. I'm willing to build the GeoJSON file and share it, but I don't have any information that actually goes into the map, which is the part that's actually useful.
If privacy issues are a big issue, particularly for reporting economic or demographic statuses, I would recommend an algorithm (similar in function to what the IRS / Census use) that can "fuzz" data across boundaries. The data could be nearly as useful without the attendant privacy concerns.
Eventually to build a website to allow people to play around with boundaries, which would allow people the opportunity to directly experience the difficulties of "sending kids to the closest school." Rationing school seats in this county is a huge problem with the overcapacity, and Arlington needs all of the tools it can help parents understand the tradeoffs with sending their kids to the "school down the street."
The other requester looks like (s)he wants to design some optimization routine; I also strongly support that application. There are lots of mathematical tools that could allow people to build algorithms to allocate students to different schools to optimize the outcome of a function of distances, study body homogeneity, overcrowding, etc.
|County Staff Notes|
Arlington Public Schools is consulting internally about the level of effort required to provide student information at the Planning Unit level on the County’s GIS portal and satisfying privacy concerns related to making such student information public. In the meantime, please reference the APS statistics page for information on student demographics. At this time we cannot publish the enrollment information but will leave this request open until there is a determination on APS's ability to share student data at the Planning Unit level on the County’s GIS portal.
